Dun (Retreat) — Heaven above Mountain below. The mountain is high and heaven is far away. Sometimes stepping back brings broader horizons; wise self-preservation is also wisdom.
Line-by-Line
Line 1:遁尾,厉,勿用有攸往。 Retreating at the tail — danger; unfavorable to proceed. Retreating too late is most dangerous.
Line 2:执之用黄牛之革,莫之胜说。 Bound fast by yellow ox-hide — no one can release. Trapped by external ties.
Line 3:系遁,有疾厉,畜臣妾吉。 Entangled retreat — danger of illness. Tending to minor affairs is auspicious; major ones are not.
Line 4:好遁,君子吉,小人否。 Graceful retreat — auspicious for the noble, unfavorable for the small. The wise know when to withdraw.
Line 5:嘉遁,贞吉。 Honorable retreat — staying upright brings good fortune. Withdraw at the perfect moment with dignity.
Line 6:肥遁,无不利。 Soaring retreat — nothing unfavorable. Fly high and leave completely.
