Gen (Keeping Still) — Mountain above Mountain. High mountains stand still. Knowing when to stop is important — stop when needed, move when needed.
Line-by-Line
Line 1:艮其趾,无咎。利永贞。
Stilling the toes — no harm; favorable for eternal uprightness. Stop and think before acting.
Line 2:艮其腓,不拯其随,其心不快。
Stilling the calves — cannot save those who follow; the heart is troubled. You control yourself but cannot protect subordinates.
Line 3:艮其限,列其夤,厉薰心。
Stilling the waist — the spine's flesh tears; danger smokes the heart. Forced stillness has become dangerous.
Line 4:艮其身,无咎。
Stilling the body — no harm. Complete stillness; safe and sound.
Line 5:艮其辅,言有序,悔亡。
Stilling the cheeks — words are orderly; regret vanishes. Control your speech.
Line 6:敦艮,吉。
Stilling with sincerity — auspicious. End or halt with genuine depth.
