Line-by-Line
Line 1:师出以律,否臧凶。 The army marches with discipline — without it, danger. Do things with order and principles.
Line 2:在师中,吉无咎,王三锡命。 In the midst of the army — good fortune, no harm. The ruler bestows orders three times. Trusted and entrusted.
Line 3:师或舆尸,凶。 The army may carry corpses — danger. Internal problems and serious losses.
Line 4:师左次,无咎。 The army camps on the left — no harm. Retreat and wait; avoid direct confrontation.
Line 5:田有禽,利执言,无咎。长子帅师,弟子舆尸,贞凶。 Game in the fields — favorable to hunt. The elder leads the army; the younger carries corpses — choose the right people.
Line 6:大君有命,开国承家,小人勿用。 The ruler issues decrees — founding states and households. Small people must not be entrusted. After success, choose wisely.
